Our Class Reader: Spring Term

Our current Year 6 class reader is ‘When the Sky Falls’ by Phil Earle.

We love that the story blends adventure, history and bravery, giving us a deeper insight as to what life was like during World War 2.

Spring 2

Geography - 'Mountains: UK and Beyond'

During Spring 2, Year 6 are studying Mountains of the UK and Beyond, developing their understanding of how mountains are formed and where major mountain ranges are located across the world and within the UK.

As well as identifying and mapping key mountain ranges, pupils are exploring the physical features of mountains and how mountain climates vary around the world. They are developing their geographical skills by comparing mountain locations and heights, using six-figure grid references and compass points. Pupils are also investigating the history of mountain exploration, considering why people climb mountains and the challenges explorers face.

Zooming in on the impact of human activity and climate change helps pupils understand how mountain environments are changing over time. They are exploring the advantages and disadvantages of mountain tourism and are considering the importance of conservation and responsible ecotourism, helping them think critically about protecting these environments in the future.

Medium Term Plan - Mountains: UK and Beyond

Spelling

At Amberley, we follow the ‘Spelling Shed’ scheme.

Daily spelling lessons are taught where children explore syllables, morphology and etymology. In addition to this, each week, spelling assignments are available on ‘Spelling Shed’ so that children can practise at home.

Weekly Homework

Each week, children will receive homework via ‘Seesaw’. If they cannot access this app at home, a paper copy will be made available to them.

Homework will be set on a Friday to be completed by the following Wednesday. This will always be based on objectives that have already been covered in class.

‘Seesaw’ codes will be stuck into homework books at the start of the year and can also be requested from the class teacher.
